Marvin “Leon” Spears was born Oct. 19, 1954, and passed away Saturday, July 29, 2023, at the age of 68.
Leon was a people person and never met a stranger. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, telling stories, and playing his old guitar. Most of all Leon loved spending time with his grandchildren and his family.
He is survived by his children, Melody VanWinkle and husband, Billy, Paula Hickson, Casey Spears and wife, Mandy, Payton Spears and wife, Randi, and John Spears; grandchildren, Jemma, Ryan, Brandon, and Mia; siblings, Joseph “Dunkie” Wayne Spears and wife, Debbie, Bobby D. Spears and wife, Dawn, Jackie Smith and husband, Gordon, and JoAnn Cooley; sisters-in-law, Diana Spears and Marie Perkins; along with numerous nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph “Dub” Willie Spears and Margaret Holley; siblings, Darrell Spears, Terry Perkins, and Evelyn Sissy Franklin; and brother-in-law, Frank Cooley.
The family received friends from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 1, with the funeral service beginning at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 2, at Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home in DeQuincy. Rev. Mike Streams, Rev. Vance Perkins, and Rev. Cecil Holley will officiate. Interment will follow at Good Hope Cemetery in Singer.
Arrangements are being handled by Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.
