J. J. Cooley

J.J. Cooley, 57, was born Nov. 11, 1965 and changed his address on Friday, July 28, 2023. J.J. was a resident of DeQuincy, high school graduate of DeQuincy High School, and a member of First Baptist Church.

After 33 years of service, he retired from Calcasieu Parish. J.J. soon realized full time retirement wasn’t for him. He was currently employed with Patrick Ashworth Logging. J.J. was the happiest behind the wheel of an 18-wheeler or in his boat with a fishing pole in his hand.

He is survived by his wife of almost 34 years, Kyra Royer Cooley; sons, Garrett Cooley and wife, Robin, Micah Cooley, and Chad Cooley; grandchildren, who were the apple of his eye, Riley, River, and Lainey Cooley; sisters, Natalie Gouldin and husband, Will, Melody Shaw and husband, Steve, Donnis Wilson and husband, Rich; brother, Dennis Carraway and wife, Stephanie; bonus dad, Pete Carraway; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, and uncles; and his four-legged fishing partner, Robert Dog.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ronald Glynn “Toup” Cooley and Carolyn Cooley Carraway; grandparents, C. J. and Ruby Barber, Cruse and Margaret Cooley; sister, Leanna Cooley; niece, Amanda Wheeler; and nephew, Lyle Clayton.

Pallbearers will be Raymond Lynn Cooley, Bobby Morton, Joe Chesson, Chandler Fayard, Toby Yellott, and Jack Barber. Honorary pallbearers will be Pat Ashworth, Nate Gouldin, Matt Bonvillain, Keith Royer, and Tommy Shoemake.

The family received friends from 5-8 p.m. Sunday, July 30, and continuing from 11 a.m. until time of the funeral service at 1 p.m. Monday, July 31, at First Baptist Church, 201 S. Pine St., DeQuincy. Rev. David Earnest and Rev. Gill Arthur officiated. Interment followed at Alston Cemetery in DeQuincy.

Arrangements were handled by Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.
