Jaymie Sanders

Jaymie Michelle Sanders, 27, of Houston, Texas, passed away from cystic fibrosis on Monday, Feb. 13, 2023. She passed peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family.

Jaymie was born in Port Arthur, Texas, on Oct. 24, 1995. She was fierce and spunky, but also humble and willing to serve wherever. She was beautiful, fashionable, and could drink a venti frappe like it was nothing. She was determined, hard-working, talented, and had the most ironclad perspective. The spirited personality she had as a child transformed into the fight she needed to never give up. She never wanted to be without those she loved. She loved cooking with her father, Mike, and putting together church outfits with her mother, Tracey. She loved hopping in the car and heading out to a youth event with her siblings. She loved exploring new and old places with her friends. She loved laughing with her family.

During her life, Jaymie accomplished much and gave to many. In spite of her health challenges, she earned an Associate of Arts degree in Behavioral Science. She continued her education and was in her third year at the University of Houston, pursuing her medical social work degree, when she passed. It was her desire to use this degree to help other children with terminal illnesses navigate life with joy and strength. On top of her studies, Jaymie enjoyed nannying, cooking, music, and volunteering at church in whatever capacity she was needed. Whether organizing an event, teaching Sunday School, or singing on the music team, Jaymie dedicated her heart to serving in the Kingdom of God.

She was preceded in death by her father, James W. Sanders, Sr.; and her grandparents, Elizabeth J. Sanders and Earnest F. Sanders; as well as grandfather Frankie Flym.

She is survived by her two “little” brothers (aka bodyguards), Will and Ethan; as well as her sister, night shift nurse, and best friend, Victoria. She is also survived by her parents and biggest supporters, Michael and Tracey Prieto; as well as grandparents Connie Flym (her Gamma, travel buddy, personal shopper, and dedicated caregiver); and Edward and Consuelo Prieto (Nonna and Papi her series-watching and popcorn-eating entourage). She was most proud of her larger-than-life family, which includes aunts, uncles, and cousins that are too many to name, yet too loud to miss (which she loved).

Jaymie was a burst of light and a breath of fresh air to her world. She was a steady stream of hope, determination, humor, and encouragement, regardless of how she was feeling herself. We honor her and her memory for the true miracle her life was.

The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Porter Apostolic Pentecostal Church for the use of their beautiful facility and the attention to detail put toward making Jaymie’s Celebration of Life service special. We would also like to thank Riley Smith and Sons Funeral Home for the great care they have shown to our precious Jaymie. Also, thank you to the wonderful saints of Christ Tabernacle for being a constant source of love and strength over the last two months. Finally, we would like to thank every person that sent messages, meals, gifts, and prayers during this difficult time. We are so thankful for the love and support we have been shown.

A Celebration of Life was held at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Feb. 20, at Porter Apostolic Pentecostal Church. The graveside service was held at 10: a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 21, at Brookside Memorial Park.

Arrangements were handled by Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.
