Steve Robertson

Steve Robertson was born at home in DeQuincy on Oct. 26, 1936. His proud parents were Irene Childress Robertson and H. L. Robertson. He passed Monday, Mar. 21, 2022.

He graduated from DeQuincy High School in 1957. He was awarded a scholarship to McNeese State College for Track High Jump Competition.

Steve never talked about his military service. He joined the Louisiana National Guard in February, 1955 and honorably discharged in February, 1958. He received his sharpshooter rifle badge in May, 1956 and his marksman pistol badge in August, 1956. He was honorably discharged as SP-3 and was squad leader 111.10. After being discharged from Louisiana National Guard, he joined the Army Reserve and was honorably discharged in March, 1963 with the rank of E-4.

His early working career included repairing tires at Babe Woods’ Service Station, driving a gravel truck and laying board roads for Scroggins Co. He worked in the oilfield for several years as a driller. He and wife, Peggy owned and operated the Mobil Service Station in DeQuincy.

His law enforcement career started with the DeQuincy Police Department. Several associates at that time were Harry Lee Cooper, Chuck Bagwell, Benjamin Simmons, Adrian Cox, Jr. and Thomas Davie. From there he was a trooper for the Louisiana State Police.

The passion for fishing drew him away to becoming a sales representative for Wright and McGill Fishing Tackle Co. From there he became a professional fishing guide on Toledo Bend Lake, working out of Fin and Feather Marina. He accomplished being one of the best fishermen on the lake. Steve and Peggy, who fished with him in the early years of their marriage, won a non-sanctioned tournament beating the fabulous John Fox. Steve also patented a worm fishing lure named Phanco.

After that he came back home and became a silva contractor for Boise Southern, planting trees and plowing fire lanes. Also, he worked part-time for the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Department. He also did oilfield contracting. When the economy hit bottom, he sold his business, 3R Construction.

After a short rest, he decided to build a car wash and convenience store on Highway 27. He owned and operated both for many years.

He was a member of Eastern Heights Baptist Church for over 50 years. He later became a member of First Baptist Church.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge #165 and Lodge #279 of DeQuincy.

Steve never met a stranger and always enjoyed telling jokes and stories. In his retirement years he enjoyed fishing on the Sabine River and Toledo Bend with his wife, Peggy.

Steve and Peggy Cooper Robertson were married on Apr. 15, 1965. One son was born of that union, Kevin and wife, Bridgit. He is also survived by his grandson, Ryan; sister, Genelle Hyatt; and a number of nephews and nieces.

Steve was preceded in death by both parents; his brother, Jimmy Wayne Robertson; and brother-in-law, Gerald Hyatt.

The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m.. Wednesday, Mar. 23 and 9-11 a.m. Thursday, Mar. 24, with the funeral service beginning at 11 a.m. The visitation and funeral will be held at Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home in DeQuincy. Ray Hyatt, Rev. Gil Arthur and Rev. Jim Fisher will be officiating. Interment will follow at Masonic Cemetery in DeQuincy.

Arrangements are being handled by Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.
