Clara Johnson

Clara Etta Johnson was born Aug. 31, 1929, and passed away Wednesday, Apr. 8, 2026, at the age of 96.

She was a proud member of the Grand Chapter of Texas Order of the Eastern Star and the Lions Club, where she dedicated countless hours to helping others and strengthening her community. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Starks.

She found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved playing dominoes, often sharing laughter and friendly competition with family and friends. An avid reader, she could often be found with a good book in hand. She also had a deep love for cooking, creating meals that brought people together and made everyone feel at home.

Of Cherokee heritage, she carried a strong sense of tradition and pride in her roots. She cherished traveling and especially looked forward to the holidays, when her home was filled with warmth, love, and the presence of those she held dear.

Above all, she treasured her family. Nothing brought her more happiness than spending time with them, especially watching her grandchildren play and grow. Her love, wisdom, and gentle spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew her.

She is survived by her children, Wynona Southerland and husband Chuck, Idell Merheb and husband P.F., Chris Johnson and husband Edward, and Sharon Bullard and husband Chace; grandchildren, Bob Browning, and wife Laura, Tisha Cunningham, Tana Harrison and husband Danny, Lauren Southerland, Amy Mitchell and husband Layton, and Kirsten Taylor and husband Colin; great-grandchildren, Caden Browning and wife Maggie, Raylee Browning, Caston Engle, Carver Engle, Millie Mitchell, Mika Mitchell, and Kooper Mitchell; great-great-grandchild, Kylan Browning; sister, Geraldine Nelson and husband Jerry; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward “Prentice” Johnson; parents, James and Elizabeth Odle; and siblings, Roy Odle and Eloise Jeanis.

The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate staff at Focused Care at Orange and her hospice nurse, Mellia for the exceptional care and kindness shown to Clara.

The family received friends from 1 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 3 p.m., Saturday, Apr. 11, at First Baptist Church, 128 Highway 109 South, Starks. Bro. Ron Butler and Rev. Jeremy Shields officiated. Interment followed at Doyle Cemetery in Starks under the direction of Dorman – Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home in Orange, Texas.
