City planners met with La. Insurance Commissioner

DeQuincy City Planners Erica Wood Chavez and Kim Rainwater traveled to Baton Rouge recently to meet with Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Tim Temple regarding the rising cost of insurance affecting local residents.

The meeting was held to address concerns from citizens about continued increases in homeowners insurance rates and being dropped from companies. During the discussion, Commissioner Temple explained that insurance companies may request rate increases or decreases, but they must be submitted for review and checked through mathematical and regulatory process to help ensure rates are justified and not excessive.

Commissioner Temple also explained that insurance costs cannot decrease overnight because insurance companies are still paying large amounts of claims from previous storms and damages. However, progress is being made, and conditions are beginning to improve statewide.

Residents are encouraged to shop around and compare insurance rates between companies. One recommendation discussed was the use of the LDIConnect app an insurance agent search tool, which allows residents to search for agents serving their specific area.

The meeting also included discussion about economic development and community involvement. Officials emphasized that communication before development and community improvements can positively impact insurance opportunities over time. Grants may also be available to upgrade to the fortified roof standard by going to FortifyHomes.la.gov.

Residents who believe they were unfairly dropped by an insurance company or who have insurance-related concerns are encouraged to contact City Planner Erica Wood Chavez by email: cityplanner@dequincy.org or call 337-786-8241 for assistance and guidance on where to begin the process.

While in Baton Rouge, Chavez and Rainwater also visited with Representative Dewith Carrier, while Kyle Rainwater attended LAMA at the capital.

Chavez and Rainwater stated, “they will continue working with state officials to advocate for residents and provide information and resources related to insurance concerns affecting our community.”
