Locals gathered at the beautiful DeQuincy Veterans Park on the evening of Memorial Day to end the long holiday weekend. Folks visited under the branches of the large live oak tree while others searched for names of family members in the memory brick area.
Mike Streams opened with a prayer. After the Pledge of Allegiance was recited, Kale Deal sang the national anthem. Deal is a recent graduate of South Beauregard and will leave on June 3, for basic training at Fort Sill. He then spoke about the importance of remembering the sacrifice of those who paid the ultimate price. We then listened to a recording of God Bless the USA by Lee Greenwood.
Local writer and author, Pierre Fontenot, then spoke about the greatness of America. He delivered a very thought-provoking speech. The names of DeQuincy natives who died while in service and are on the DeQuincy War Memorial were read aloud. A moment of silence was observed followed by TAPS presented by Anthony Kennon on the trumpet. Penny Blackburn then led us in prayer. We are thankful for those who took the time to attend and remember those who gave all.
We also gratefully acknowledge Robert, Kai and Jet LeBlanc for providing and operating the sound system.
God Bless the USA!
