English Dept. at SLCHS to be named after Harry T. Methvin

By Vance Perkins

The late Harry Methvin, a lifetime resident of the DeQuincy area was recently honored. During his career as an English teacher, he taught at St. Louis Catholic High School for almost two decades. He was loved and respected by the students, many of whom became close friends. Methvin was also inducted into the St. Louis Catholic High School Hall of Fame. He was the first non-Catholic to be so honored.

In 2020, Hurricane Laura destroyed the buildings of the SLCHS campus. Presently students are being taught in portable buildings on the campus. After years of waiting and numerous delays, construction of a new school has begun. The new school is being built on a 42-acre lot at the corner of East McNeese St. and Corbina Rd. in Lake Charles. This $53 million dollar project will replace and expand the old campus on Bank St.

A former student from the Class of 1976 has made a $300 thousand donation in memory of Methvin. In recognition of this generous gift, a wing of the new school will be named the Harry T. Methvin English Department.

He would be humbled and honored that this would be taking place.
