DeQuincy High School Choir will be the opening performer on Thursday, Apr. 10, from 5:15-6:15 p.m. The Choir has been invited to perform at Carnegie Hall in New York in 2026.
Here is a little bit about how that came to be:
In an extraordinary opportunity for DeQuincy High School students, choir members will perform at one of the world’s most prestigious venues—Carnegie Hall in New York City. The invitation comes after Dr. Will Chandler, Director of Choral Activities at McNeese State University, was selected to conduct Joseph Haydn’s Lord Nelson Mass at Carnegie Hall in April 2026. Dr. Chandler has personally extended an invitation to DeQuincy High’s own Choral Director, Carie Barnes, and her talented students to join the performance.
The concert will be part of a five-day residency from Apr. 23-27, 2026, where students will not only perform with the national choir, but also receive an enriching musical education and experience, working under the leadership of Dr. Chandler. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity promises to be a defining moment for the DeQuincy High School Choir members, offering them an unforgettable experience to showcase their talents on the world stage.
However, such a prestigious event comes with significant costs. The total cost of the trip, including travel, lodging, and participation in the residency, is estimated at approximately $3,200 per student.
As the event draws closer, the DeQuincy community is encouraged to rally around these exceptional young artists by supporting them financially. Contributions from local businesses, organizations, and individuals are essential in making this opportunity accessible for all students who wish to participate.
“The chance to perform at Carnegie Hall is a dream come true for our students,” said Carie Barnes, Choral Director at DeQuincy High School. “This experience will not only help them grow as musicians but will also inspire them to continue pursuing their passion for music. We are incredibly grateful for Dr. Chandler’s invitation and for the support of our community.”
To support the choir’s journey, local fundraising efforts are underway, including community donations, benefit performances, and sponsorship opportunities. These funds will help cover the trip’s expenses, ensuring that every student has the chance to participate regardless of financial circumstance.
The DeQuincy High School Choir’s performance at Carnegie Hall will be a landmark achievement, not only for the students involved but for the entire community. It’s an opportunity to showcase the talent and hard work of our youth on a national stage, and the support of local residents can make all the difference.

Let’s come together to help these young artists make their dreams come true and leave a lasting legacy in DeQuincy’s history!
