Lois Frugé

On Nov. 5, 2023, Lois Elaine Carter Fruge’ got her wings after a long and courageous battle with cancer and COPD. While battling these diseases she never complained. Her attitude was God is in control and everything is according to His will and His timing. Elaine was born in Pollock and graduated from Georgetown High School. In 1976, she went to work at Juvenile Reception and Diagnostic Center/Dept. of Corrections. After working there, she transferred to headquarters and was secretary to the Assistant Secretary of Adult Services. From there she worked as a clerical supervisor and Support Enforcement Office for Child Support.

In 1983, she transferred to Phelps Correctional Center as a cadet in security. While employed at Phelps she obtained the rank of Lt. Colonel prior to the prison closing November 2012, at which time she retired. She was the first female to obtain the rank of Captain and the only female to obtain the rank of Major and Lt. Colonel in the history of the prison.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband Preston Fruge’; daughter Keisha Terry (Rod) of DeQuincy; son Glenn Hagler (Heather) of Corpus Christi, Texas; grandchildren, Michael Hagler (Karey) of DeQuincy; Allie Terry of Baton Rouge; Garrett Terry of DeQuincy; Dalton and Kaedynce Hagler of Corpus Christi, Texas; great-grandchildren Donnie Hagler of DeQuincy; Kayley Russell of Carlyss; Kaycie Pool of Lubbock, Texas; Robert (RJ) Richard of DeQuincy; one sister, Margaret O’Neal (Merrit) of Deville; brothers Hugh Carter (Diann) of Baker, Wayne Carter (Cheryl) of Jackson, Herman Carter (Patsy) of Georgetown; James Carter (Christine) of Pineville.

Preceding her in death were parents, Ralph and Aubrey Carter; sisters Evelyn Lasyone and Helen Phillips; brothers, Robert Wesley Carter, Curtis Carter, Ralph Carter, Allen Carter, Barney Carter, R.C. Carter, and Robert Wayne Carter.

The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9, at First Baptist Church, 201 South Pine St., DeQuincy. Pastor David Earnest and Rev. Jim Wiengeart will officiate. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Lincecum Baptist Church at which time ashes will be buried in Lincecum Cemetery in Pollock.

Cremation has been entrusted to Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.
