House fire claims life of DeQuincy woman

At 5:52 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 22, Ward Six Fire Protection District No. One was dispatched to a structure fire in the 1100 block of Rigmaiden Cemetery Rd. with a victim trapped inside. Houston River Fire Dept. and DeQuincy Volunteer Fire Dept. were also dispatched as automatic aid.

Upon arrival of Unit 901 at 5:57 a.m., immediate entry into the residence to perform rescue occurred. Heavy fire conditions and a partial roof collapse forced crews to go into a defensive fire attack.

Ward 6 Engine 5, Engine 7, Service 6, and Service 8 responded with 10 firefighters.

Mutual aid was also activated for additional manpower and tankers to establish water shuttle operations.

Mutual aid departments that responded were Sulphur Fire Dept., Ward 1 Fire Department, Westlake Fire Department, and Beauregard Parish Fire District 2.

Ward 5 Fire District was placed on standby at DeQuincy Fire Department and Carlyss Fire was on standby at Houston River Fire Department to cover any other emergency calls.

One male victim was able to self rescue prior to arrival of the fire department and suffered minor burn injuries in an attempt to rescue the female occupant.

Acadian Ambulance responded to assist with patient care and Firefighter medical monitoring in rehab.

Unfortunately, the female victim, 3 dogs and 1 cat were located deceased in the structure.

Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal is investigating this incident an all further press releases will be issued by them.
