Streams named Middle School Teacher of Year

DeQuincy Middle School has named Melanie Streams as their 2022 Teacher of the Year.

Streams has been teaching for 30 years with her being at DMS for the past five years and having previously taught at DeQuincy Elementary School for 25 years. She currently teaches Math at DMS.

She earned a Bachelor’s degree from McNeese State University in Elementary Education in 1992, and she earned a Master’s Degree in Supervision in 1997.

When asked what she enjoys most about teaching, she responded by saying, “What I enjoy most about teaching is helping someone understand difficult skills or material in a way that makes sense to them. I’m honored when students trust me enough to express things that matter to them. I love listening and offering advice when needed.”

She also stated, “Through the course of 30 years as an educator, I’ve been asked frequently, “How do you teach year after year, day after day?” My response is, “ I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” Philippians 4:13. I view teaching as a ministry of serving others. I’ve learned lessons of patience, humility, kindness, and self-control.”

Streams is a member of Hargrove Baptist Church where she teaches Sunday School to the 2-5-year-old group.

She lives in DeQuincy with her husband Scott and her daughter Kristin, and she became a grandmother for the first time in August, when her daughter Hannah and husband Nathan had a baby girl named Piper.
