Margaret Van Winkle

Margaret “Mawie” Idell Van Winkle, 91, was born Apr. 16, 1931 and passed away Wednesday, May 25, 2022. Margaret was a lifelong member of First United Pentecostal Church, attending Sunday School with a perfect attendance for seventy-two years. She was also very involved in the Church Bus Ministry. She loved to bake and read books to her grandchildren. She also loved cats. She had a collection of ceramic cats but she was also known to take care, love and feed any cats that found their way to her door. She will be greatly missed by her family and her church family.

She is survived by her son, Rev. Jimmy Van Winkle and wife, Rhonda; her grandchildren, Jonna Ashworth and husband, Robert, Brigitte Holloway and husband, Brad, Gretchen Van Winkle, Jacqueline Sparkman and husband, Chad, Hayleigh Van Winkle, and Harrison Van Winkle; great-grandchildren, Michelle Wix, Taylor Ashworth, Collin Ashworth, Kentadi Buffinet, Shyanne Sparkman, Chad Sparkman, Jr., Ava Holloway and Grayson Holloway; great-great-grandson, Gabriel Ashworth; and her sisters, Betty Groves and Arlene LaCroix.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James Columbus Van Winkle; son, Johnny Van Winkle; parents, Alex and Idell Powell; and sister, Joann Hebert.

The family received friends from 9-11 a.m., Tuesday, May 31, at First United Pentecostal Church, 230 Smith St., DeQuincy, with a funeral service to begin at 11 a.m. Rev. Carlton Jackson, Jr. officiated. Interment followed at Perkins Cemetery in DeQuincy.

Arrangements were handled by Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.
