DeQuincy Middle Teacher, Student of Year named

Teacher of the Year

DeQuincy Middle School faculty and staff selected Nettie Areno as the 2021-22 Teacher of the Year.

Areno is a dedicated, caring teacher whose goal is to encourage every student to reach their highest potential. She began her teaching career 16 years ago at E.K. Key Elementary in Sulphur. She has spent the last five years at DeQuincy Middle School teaching sixth grade English Language Arts. She has been Beta sponsor at both DeQuincy Middle and E. K. Key and she serves on the DMS Leadership Team. Any task she is given is done to the fullest and her caring heart is what makes the students love her.

As an educator, Mrs. Areno feels empowered to motivate students to step out of their comfort zone, and to make a difference in the classroom, school, and community. Her desire is that all students are successful in school, that they be of service to others, and have positive interactions with peers and adults which builds self-confidence. As a result, she feels this will enhance communication skills, leadership skills, and help to establish a purpose to be proud of.

In her spare time, she enjoys hanging out with her family more than anything. She is married to Nathan Areno and they have two daughters, Katie Mae and Allie Lynn. Her hobbies include painting, crafting, writing poetry, listening to music, and playing the banjo. She also enjoys spending time outdoors, hiking and taking care of her plants.

Mrs. Areno now advances to the parish Teacher of the Year competition.
