Velma Gearen

Velma Rose Gearen was born Feb. 13, 1940 and passed away Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2021 at the age of 81. Velma loved sports and loved watching her grandchildren play sports. She was a wonderful cook; she was happiest when she was in the kitchen cooking and serving her family and friends. Family was everything to Velma and she will be greatly missed.

She is survived by her children, Lisa Horn and husband, Tommy of DeQuincy; Joni Whitehead and husband, Casey of DeQuincy, Monica Bruno and husband, Richard of Lake Charles and Bill Gearen and wife, Lisa of DeQuincy; grandchildren, Hollie Mire, Casey Smith, Haleigh Smith, Jody Ashworth, Todd Ashworth, Kara Ashworth, Dalton Gearen and Gunnar Gearen; and 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Harvey Stanley and wife, Charlotte of Apple Valley, Calif. and Viola Nelson of DeQuincy.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Raymond “Sambo” Gearen, Sr.; infant son, Billy Raymond Gearen, Jr.; grandson, Jesse Horn; parents, Robert Stanley and Sarah Perkins Stanley; sisters, Betty LeBlanc and Lenora Lykins; and brothers, George Nelson and Dusty Stanley.

The family received friends from 5-8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 5, and the funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 6. The visitation and funeral were held at Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home in DeQuincy. Interment followed at Masonic Cemetery in DeQuincy.

Arrangements were handled by Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.
