J. D. Strickland, Sr.

J. D. Strickland, Sr., a resident of Lake Charles was born Mar. 11, 1940 in Gafney, South Carolina and passed away Friday, Aug. 20, 2021 at the age of 81. He proudly served his country in the United States Army as a Green Beret Special Forces starting at the young age of 18. He was a faithful member for fifty years of Apostolic Temple Pentecostal Church, Lake Charles.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Yvonne Askew Strickland; children, Ronald “R. W.” Strickland and wife, Ruby Parker Strickland, Johnny Dean Strickland, Jr. and Wendy Kay Strickland; grandchildren, Alexandra Myers and husband, Shawn, A’driana Strickland, Derek Strickland, Jessen Hanks and wife, Kim, Amberly Ancelet and husband, Tee, Ashlee Summers and husband, Terry, Aimee Moore-Strickland; and numerous great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J. R. “Smokey” Strickland and Gertrude Williams Strickland; sister, Ann Davis; and brothers, Jim Strickland and Earl Strickland.

The family received friends from 5-8 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23, at Apostolic Temple Pentecostal Church, 2711 West Prien Lake Road, Lake Charles. The funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 24, at Apostolic Temple Pentecostal Church with Pastor R. D. Treece officiating. Interment followed at Antioch Cemetery, Buna, Texas.

Arrangements were handled by Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.
