David Gillis

David Bryan Gillis, a resident of Starks was born Sept. 24, 1951 and passed away Sunday, Nov. 8, 2020 at the age of 69. David loved his family, fishing, hunting and gardening. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved nature. He never met a stranger and he loved to pick, cut up and laugh. He found joy in the simple things this life had to offer. He was a plain ole barefooted country boy who lived life to the fullest and found great joy in it. The one thing David was most proud of (and he made sure everyone knew it) was the true love of his life, Vera. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Vera Gillis, daughters, JaDene VanWinkle and husband, John of Buna, Texas and Breah Mitchell and husband, Richie of Singer; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brothers, Jerry Lynn Gillis of Vidor, Texas and Harper Walter Gillis and wife, Mary of Starks; and sister, Mildred LaFleur and husband, Ivan of Ville Platte. He is also survived by his bonus children, Buddy and Regina Trussell and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Alton Jerry Gillis and Lurline Joyce Hollie Gillis; and brother, Harry Manuel Gillis.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020 at Fountain Cemetery in Starks. Rev. Jeremy Shields will be officiating.

Arrangements are being handled by Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.
