Julius N. Miller was born Nov. 2, 1931, and passed away at his home on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at the age of 94.
If you knew him as Mr. Miller, Julius, or just Miller, you couldn’t help but love him even if he offended you at times. At the age of 10, he was baptized in the Calcasieu River near Slagle by his father who was a Baptist minister. He faithfully served by his quiet generosity, whether it was giving a car to someone who needed one, giving money where needed, or just lending a hand when needed.
He graduated from Oak Grove High School in 1950 and then went into the Army where he was stationed in Germany. It was there he met his wife, Irmgard, and married in 1953. In 1954 he returned to the states with his bride and honorable discharge. He was also in the U.S. Army Reserve for eight years when he was honorably discharged as 1st Lieutenant in 1963. He attended Northwestern University and graduated in 1957 with Bachelor of Science degree, then in 1961 he graduated from Northwestern University with Master of Science in Education degree. While at Northwestern University he was a member of Phi Kappa Phi.
Fox hunting was his passion, and he absolutely loved his dogs. It was nothing for him to drive to Mississippi or Arkansas to pick up a new fox hound dog. It was on a fox hunt with other men that he met Judson Shows, the principal at Ragley High School and he offered him a teaching job. That began his teaching career and the rest is history, along with his paddle. He taught at Ragley High School and then at South Beauregard High School where he became the guidance counselor until his retirement in 1984.
When he made the move to Ragley he became a member of Magnolia Baptist Church for over 68 years. He was the treasurer of the church for 56 years. He would always give out peppermints to the kids at church. If you were really special, you would get root beer barrels. Those he did not give out as freely as the peppermint.
He was an avid sports fan, whether in person or on the television. Many will remember him at the basketball courts or baseball/softball fields. He even had a sign with his name on it in the gym at South Beauregard High School where he always sat.
He was born in Florien to Rev. Vercie R. Miller and Florie Sibley Miller who preceded him in death along with his wife, Irmgrad Henkel Miller, and brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Jean Miller.
He is survived by a nephew, Dr. Larry Miller (Cecilia) of Sherman, Texas; two great nephews, Robert Miller (Jordan) and Thomas Miller. He is also survived by his “inherited” daughter, Casandra Cole Girola (Dino); sons, David (Becky) and Erie (Lacy); along with the grands, Joy, Whit, Rhett, Kylie, Kannon, and Anson. He leaves behind cousins and many friends who were family, and his special girl, Hallie Guidry.
He will be dearly missed but never forgotten.
The family received friends from 4 – 8 p.m., Monday, July 13, and continued from 8 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 10 a.m., Tuesday, July 14, at Magnolia Baptist Church in Ragley. Interment to follow at Magnolia Cemetery in Ragley.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Louisiana Baptist Children’s Home or Dry Creek Baptist Camp.
