Last week the DeQuincy community lost Scotty Brown who was a life time resident born and raised here in DeQuincy.
Scotty was a very talented baseball player and was blessed to have the opportunity to be drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in the 4th round of the 1975 Major League Baseball draft.
Brown graduated the year before DeQuincy High school started the baseball program, which is something he had so badly wanted to have during his time as a student athlete at DeQuincy High School.
He played his first professional season with the rookie league Billings Mustangs in 1975 before moving to the Nashville Sounds in 1979
He made his big league debut with the Cincinnati Reds on Aug. 11, 1981 and played his last big league game with the Reds on Oct. 2, 1981. He was traded to the Kansas City Royals organization and played for their AAA affiliate Omaha Royals in 1983.
In his only game with the Reds on Aug. 11, 1981, he had a 1-0 record with a 2.77 ERA and 7 strikeouts working 2 1⁄3 innings in scoreless relief.
Scotty Brown leaves a lasting legacy in DeQuincy and is a prime example that even an ol’ small town country boy can make it to the Big Leagues.
