This year’s Run the Rail 5K carried special significance as the DeQuincy community came together to honor the life of Shawna Nelson Collins, a DeQuincy native who tragically lost her life in a plane crash on Jan. 21, 2026.
The daughter of Joe and Carolyn Nelson, Collins was raised in a family deeply rooted in the community. She carried that pride with her throughout her life. Even after moving away, she remained closely connected to DeQuincy, often returning for celebrations, local events, and to support the community she loved.
She had participated in the Run the Rail 5K in previous years, making this year’s tribute especially meaningful. Family members, friends, and community supporters gathered to run in her memory, celebrating a life that touched so many.
Known as a kind and beautiful soul, Collins will be deeply missed. Her love for her hometown and her support of local organizations leave behind a lasting legacy that will continue to be cherished throughout the DeQuincy community.
