Smith state discus champion

By Mike Suchanek

Seth Smith, recent graduate at South Beauregard and son of Sammy and Jennifer Smith, recently signed a National Letter of Intent to compete with the Northwestern State University Track and Field team.

Smith graduated in May from South Beauregard High School, where he participated in Track and Field, as well as Basketball all four years.

He competed in his senior track season in the discus throw while recovering from a severe ankle injury that he suffered during the basketball season. He continued to improve on his marks throughout the season setting new personal records at nearly every meet. He went on to win his district and regional championships and advance to the LHSAA Class 3A State Track and Field meet as the number one seed.

In his first throw at the state meet, Smith was able to break a South Beauregard High School record by throwing a personal best throw of 162 feet and 3 inches, which allowed him to claim the state championship in the discus throw.

He will continue to throw the discus at Northwestern State University and will likely compete in other throwing events as well. He plans to study finance so that he can become a financial advisor or money manager.
