DeQuincy represented in Senior Games

By Jeffra Wise DeViney

Opening Ceremonies of Southwest Louisiana District Olympics Senior Games were held Thursday, Mar. 23, in Lake Charles with 22 teams competing in Bean Bag Baseball including a team from DeQuincy.
Members of the team are: Amos Jones, Ada Wood, Rennie Aultman, Bessie Bagwell, Mary Teen, Lisa Alfred, and Alice Glass. Team Alternates were Tom Threet and Phil McCleod.

Some of these individuals were part of the 2019 team that participated from DeQuincy Senior Center. Bessie Bagwell, this year’s team chairperson said “although we didn’t win…we had fun!” The team has been practicing at Oak St. Rec. Center.

Amos Jones was honored as 2023 Olympian of the Year. Jones is 93 years young and likes to play bean bag baseball. He has been a strong advocate for local senior citizens and does fundraising for them through his non-profit organization, DeQuincy Community ACTS Foundation in which he is the President. He is also a member of the Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors.

Local Senior Citizens have been meeting over the past year at Oak St. Rec. for different activities. DeQuincy Senior Citizen Center was lost to Hurricane Laura. For the past half year Ward 6 Recreation Board and local businesses and organizations have been advocating for our seniors by sponsoring a bingo/luncheon each Thursday at the center beginning at 10:30 a.m. A schedule is published weekly in DeQuincy News and on Ward 6 Rec. Center Facebook page. If your business or organization is interested in helping with this initiative, call Suzann Threet at 337-842-2063.

Hixson-Snider LIFT Program sponsored the team’s entry fee.
