Jonathan Areno

Jonathan “Johnny Wayne” Areno, 70, was born Dec. 13, 1951, and passed away Thursday, Nov. 17, 2022. He served in the United States Army and retired from AT&T after 42 years. Johnny Wayne had a love for teaching kids in Sunday School. He also enjoyed music and was one of the founders of The Areno Boys and The Arenos. For 50 years he traveled and played gospel and bluegrass.

He is survived by his wife, Sheila Areno; children, Nathan Wayne Areno and wife, Nettie, and Penny Pevoto and husband, Kent; grandchildren, Brilyn Wade, Katie Areno, Kollison Wade, and Allie Areno; and siblings, Norman Areno and wife, Darlene, LaJuana Coleman and husband, Benny, and Kenny Areno and wife, Kellie.

He was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Rebecca Areno; and parents, Abraham and Levera Areno.

The family received friends from 5-7 p.m. with the funeral following at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 21, at First United Pentecostal Church of DeQuincy, 230 Smith St., DeQuincy. A graveside service was held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Nov. 22, at Mimosa Pines Cemetery in Sulphur.

Arrangements were handled by Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 1810 W 4th Street, DeQuincy.
