Wanda Overmyer Hunt passed away peacefully on Oct. 4, 2022 surrounded by her loved ones and in the comfort of her beloved home. Born on June 2, 1931 in Fauke, Arkansas to her parents, Lucas Marion Overmyer and Linnie Bell Upchurch Overmyer, she was 91 years old.
She was the queen of hospitality; she spent many of her days cooking delicious meals for her family and friends, preserving and canning foods, and growing and arranging the most beautiful flowers. She loved to paint, crochet, and do word puzzles. When she wasn’t in the kitchen entertaining or working on her various projects, she could be found enjoying a cup of coffee on her porch swing and watching the birds fly by.
She was a member of Opelousas Bible Church in Opelousas and was a lifelong, faithful servant of Christ. She served as a Sunday school teacher for many years and as an accountant for LC Charity Hospital and LCIS. Those who knew her would say that she was the epitome of a Proverbs 31 woman with a servant’s heart and a fierce love for her family and for the Lord. Above all else, she practiced the two greatest commandments Jesus has given to us all: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind; and love your neighbor as yourself.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 46 years, O. J. Hunt; her son, Jay Mathews; her sister, Betty Mohan; and her brothers Roy, Herschel, John, and Kenneth Overmyer.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Connie Bell and husband Dennis of DeQuincy, Tim Hunt and wife Rhonda of DeVille, Jan Barrow and husband Wayne of DeQuincy, Melinda Mathews of Woodville, Texas, and David Mathews of Opelousas; her sister, Carol Clement of Benton, Ark.; her sister-in-law Marylee Overmyer of DeQuincy; her 20 grandchildren- Kathy and husband Morgan, Lori and husband Stephen, Lucas and wife Sally, Todd and wife Robin, Chad and wife Jenny, Blake and wife Janay, Collin, Randy and wife Carla, Kyle, Jennie and husband Angel, Patience, Meagan, Sarah, Dakota, Garrett, Justin, Jonnice, Linda, Clint, and Peter; her 36 great-grandchildren; and her three great-great-grandchildren; along with countless other relatives and loved-ones, including her beloved dog, Bimbo.
She was overflowing with love for her children and the rest of her family, and she always endeavored to be the best Mother, MawMaw, Aunt, Sibling, and Friend she could be. Those who knew and loved her would say that she most certainly succeeded. She will be sorely missed, but we can take solace in the knowledge that she is dancing on the streets of gold as we sit here today.
The family received friends from 5-8 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 6, and continued from 8-10 a.m., Friday, Oct. 7, at Temple Baptist Church in DeQuincy.
Funeral services were held on Friday, Oct. 7, at 10 a.m. at Temple Baptist Church. A graveside service was held at 2 p.m., at Little Red Church Cemetery in Opelousas.
Arrangements were handled by Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 1810 W. 4th Street, DeQuincy.
