James Burnett

James “J. P.” Preston Burnett, 83, of DeQuincy, passed away on Saturday, Apr. 9, 2022 at his residence.

He was born to his late parents, Clarence and Dessie Burnett on Nov. 9, 1938 in Corpus Christi, Texas. J. P. was proud of his service in the United States Army. He worked on drilling rigs until he was injured and then worked in the logging industry until his retirement. J. P. enjoyed hunting, fishing, and gardening later in his life. He enjoyed sitting on his front porch watching the birds and squirrels, cookouts, and being the life of the party. He was the ultimate prankster. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by his brother, Odell Burnett of Singer; sister, Doris Raby of DeQuincy; five grandchildren, Brent, Cindy, D, Rodney, Steven, Luke, and Jeremy; four great-grandchildren, Krysta, Conner, Kassidy, and Brenna; along with one great-great-granddaughter, Karina.

J. P. was preceded in death by his two sons, Hank Burnett, and Wallace Burnett; one daughter, Shelia “Punkin” Cobler; three brothers, Chink Burnett, Odis Burnett, and Bones Burnett; three sisters, Thelma Stokes, Lillie Wilson, and Dorothy Burnett; along with one great-granddaughter, Kaeleigh.

A Celebration of J.P.’s life was held at Oretta Pentecostal Church on Thursday, Apr. 14, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Dustyn Rose officiating. Visitation was at the church on Thursday, beginning at 11 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial followed at Oretta Cemetery.

Services were entrusted to Jordan and Amanda Mothershed of Hixson-Snider Funeral Home, 205 E. Harrison St., DeQuincy.
