Norma Says

Norma Jean Says, 89, of Starks passed into the arms of her Savior on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021 at Westwood Manor Nursing Home in DeRidder.

She was born to her late parents, Clarence and Juanita Drake on Aug. 20, 1932 in Starks. She enjoyed traveling, especially collecting the Bells from the different States. Norma also enjoyed her garden, visiting her family, and a good cup of Dark Roast Seaport Coffee. She was a long time member of First Pentecostal Church of Starks, where she was very active in visiting the sick and preparing meals for the families of the loved ones who had passed. Norma enjoyed being at her camp on Toledo Bend, and Catfishing at night was her favorite. She was known in Starks for “MawMaw’s Chicken and Dumplings”. She was best known by her grandchildren as “MawMaw Boy.”

She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Darla Torrance Says; one brother, Quinton Drake (Nancy); one sister, Idell Gibson (Carlton); grandson, Chris Says (Audrey), granddaughter, Dana Says Buxton (Brad Fontenot); great-grands, Ashton Says (Hannah Brown), Mackenzie Says, Conner Buxton; brother-in-law, William “Dub” Matthews; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

Norma was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Robert Says; son, Dennis Craig Says; brother, Norris Drake; along with two sisters, Velma “Cooter” Stanley, and Betty “Tootsie” Matthews.

A Celebration of Norma’s life was held at First Pentecostal Church of Starks on Tuesday, Dec. 21, at 2 p.m., with Pastor Karl Smith officiating.

Visitation was at First Pentecostal Church of Starks on Monday, Dec. 20, from 5 until 8 p.m. Visitation resumed at the church on Tuesday, from 12 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial followed at Says Cemetery.

Pallbearers for Norma were: Conner Buxton, Ashton Says, Mark Green, Jimmy Stewart, Jordan Jones, Otis Gibson, and David “Sugarman” Stanley.

The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Westwood Manor Nursing Home for the loving care they showed Norma during this time.
