American Legion Post 183 re-activated

By Major Jerry Bell

On Thursday, May 27, American Legion Post #183 was re-activated. Former members and new members met at the Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home for their first meeting. After an opening prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance was given, the meeting was called to order by Frank Richard, the 7th District Commander.

The first order of business was to elect officers. Major Jerry Bell was nominated and voted in to be the Commander. Jeri Lynn Henagan was nominated and voted in to be the Adjutant. Arnold Blagrave was nominated and voted in to be the Finance Officer. Commander Bell appointed David Brawner to be the First Vice Commander and Kenny Blagrave to be the Second Vice-Commander. Commander Bell appointed Constable Ricky Brummett to be the Sergeant-at-Arms. Other appointments are forth coming.

Also attending the meeting was Allen J. Landry of DeQuincy, a World War II veteran. This was a great honor to have Mr. Landry in our presence and he was well received.

After the meeting was adjourned, a special executive meeting was held to discuss our financial situation and to discuss procedures regarding our dues. The dues will be kept the same at $35 a year. Presently, the Post has zero funds so we will be limited as to what impact we can have on DeQuincy such as scholarships and other activities. However, as our Post grows, we will be able to do what other organizations do for DeQuincy.

If anyone has an uncle, dad, or grandpa that has ever served on active duty, they can join. It would be a nice present and the $35 dues also entitles one to get a Legion magazine once a month that is fun and interesting to read.

The Post also thanked Mayor Riley Smith for letting us use his facilities for our meeting until we can obtain a building.

This will be a great opportunity for veterans to join a wonderful organization which looks after veterans statewide.

The Post would also like to thank the DeQuincy News, especially Doug DeViney for taking photos. Thank you in advance for joining our organization.

May God Bless our Veterans.
