Norwood Standley

Norwood (Bill) Standley was born Jan. 7, 1929 and passed away Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2021 at the age of 92.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, William and Gladys Standley; two sisters, Vivian East and Gertie Mae Reed; five brothers Howard, Paul, John, Lloyd and Donald; one daughter and son-in-law, Dianne and William F. Herrin; and son-in-law, Tom Rosson.

Bill and Bartie are survived by their children Susanne Richoux (Fred), Roxanne Rosson, Lynanne Hunter (Steve), Joanne Holzen (David), Wayne Standley (Terry), Mike Shoemake (Beth), and John Shoemake (Julie).

Bill served two years in the U. S. Marine Corp which included a stint in the Philippines.

He married Joyce Edna Stewart on June 4, 1949. They had six children: five girls, Dianne, Susanne, Roxanne, Lynanne, Joanne; and one son, Wayne.

Bill finished his college degree at East Texas Baptist College and studied one year at Southwestern Seminary.

During his career, he pastored South Groves Baptist, Old Spanish Trail Baptist Church, worked at Kenai Baptist Church in Alaska, and interim pastored and supplied at many small churches in the Houston, Golden Triangle, and East Texas area. Because of his desire to serve the Lord, he was able to visit Jamaica, Russia, Africa, France, and Germany on mission trips. He also lived in Northern England for six months building a church there. When not pastoring, he was involved in his local church serving and teaching wherever God led him.

During most of these years Bill was a bi-vocational pastor and worked for Shell Refinery in Deer Park, Texas for over 30 years where he retired.
After the death of his wife Joyce, Bill found a new love and married Myrtice (Bartie) Burrell on May 5, 2001. This added two new brothers, Mike and John Shoemake, new grandkids and great-grandkids to this loud happy family.

True to who he was, Bill along with Bartie continued to serve the Lord. Their travels took them from Northern England, to Houston, Texas to Trinity, Texas and DeQuincy. Wherever they were, they were spreading God’s word and his love.

Bill and Bartie shared their 20 grandkids; 25 great-grandkids; and two great-great-grandkids. This big happy family spent many weekends and holidays together which they shared with all those that joined the fun. Through the years Bill and Bartie prayed for each child, grandchild, great-grandchild and great-great-grandchild by name every day. Their family was their pride and joy.

Children are a heritage from the Lord. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame. Psalm 127:3-5
