Murphy Gene Ashworth of DeRidder died Saturday, Jan. 31, 2026, at the age of 88. He was born in Singer.
A graduate of DeRidder High School, he was a gifted athlete who excelled in every sport he tried his hand at. After high school, he dedicated over 30 years of his life to the powerline industry, where he worked for Red Simpson.
He is survived by his wife, Judith Wilson Ashworth; daughters, Susan Cryer and husband, Johnny and Kim Mount; son, Michael Ashworth and wife, Renee Ashworth; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Shelby and Rosetta Burgess Ashworth; two sisters; three brothers; and son-in-law, Clifford Mount.
Funeral services were held at Myers Colonial Funeral Home on Wednesday, Feb. 4, at 10 a.m. to celebrate his life. Michael Clark officiated. Following the service, he was laid to rest at Good Hope Cemetery in Singer under the direction of Myers-Colonial Funeral Home in DeRidder.
