Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program offering free services

United Way Southwest Louisiana announces that appointments are now open for the upcoming tax season through its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, offering free, IRS-certified tax preparation services to eligible individuals and families across the five-parish Southwest Louisiana region.

Appointments can be scheduled by calling 211 or by visiting unitedwayswla.org/vita.

The VITA program serves low-to-moderate income households, seniors, individuals with disabilities, and residents with limited English proficiency, ensuring access to trusted tax assistance at no cost. IRS-certified volunteers help eligible filers claim valuable credits such as the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), Child Tax Credit, and education credits—often resulting in significant refunds.

During the 2024 tax season, United Way Southwest Louisiana’s VITA program prepared 2,812 federal tax returns, generating more than $3 million in federal refunds and nearly $259,000 in state refunds. The program also helped local families claim over $966,000 in Earned Income Tax Credits, producing a total economic impact of more than $4.6 million for Southwest Louisiana communities.

“VITA continues to be one of the most impactful programs we offer,” said Denise Durel, President and CEO of United Way Southwest Louisiana. “Every return prepared represents real dollars staying in our community—helping families pay bills, reduce debt, and build financial stability. This work would not be possible without our dedicated volunteers and community partners.”

United Way Southwest Louisiana operates nine VITA sites across Calcasieu, Allen, Beauregard, and Jeff Davis parishes. Current locations and scheduling details are available online at unitedwayswla.org/vita or by calling 211.

For individuals who prefer a self-guided option, United Way also offers MyFreeTaxes, a secure online filing platform accessible through unitedwayswla.org/vita.

United Way Southwest Louisiana is actively recruiting volunteers for the upcoming tax season. Volunteers receive IRS certification and may serve in various roles, including tax preparers, intake specialists, and site coordinators. Those interested can learn more at unitedwayswla.org/vitavolunteer.
Organizations, businesses, or agencies interested in hosting a VITA site are encouraged to contact United Way Southwest Louisiana at 337-433-1088, ext. 210.
