Carroll “Gene” Smith was born Oct. 27, 1945, and passed away Wednesday, Sept. 11, 2024, at the age of 78.
Gene worked 47 years for the Union Pacific Railroad, 12 of which he was the Local Chairman of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers. He was awarded the honor of serving as Engineer for the World’s Fair Special in New Orleans. He spent his whole life as a member of The Pentecostal Church of DeQuincy where he served as an usher. Gene was loved by his family, friends, and community. He could be found working on vehicles, manicuring his yard, helping others, drinking coffee with Stella, or fishing in the south side of Toledo Bend with good friends and cherished family fishermen. He will be greatly missed by everyone, especially his wife of 42 years, Connie. They completed each other.
He is survived by his wife, Connie Lambert Smith; children, LaDonna Jean Clark and husband Rick, Carroll Jason Smith and wife Myra, Shannon Royer and husband Scott, and Derek Smith and wife Sarah; grandchildren, Travis Clark, Cody Clark and wife Cassie, Sara Royer, Elizabeth Wright and husband Steven, Emily Gilbert and husband Alex, Noah Gene Royer, Anna Ancelet and husband Chance, Heaven Royer, AnnaGrace Smith, Cade Smith, and Aubrey Smith; great-grandchildren, Sophia, Aiden, Atticus, Wyatt, Cullen, Casen, Penny, and Thomas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Delores Smith; and siblings, Larry Smith, Gloria Smith, and Sharon Hawthorne.
Pallbearers were Travis Clark, Cody Clark, Noah Royer, Cade Smith, Alex Gilbert, and Chance Ancelet. Honorary Pallbearers were Joe Perry, Raymond Lowery, Larry Royer, Fred Aucoin, Billy Kellogg, David Hennigan, and Steve Breaux.
The family received friends from 11 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m., Friday, Sept.13, at The Pentecostal Church in DeQuincy. Interment followed at Riley Smith Memorial Park in DeQuincy.
Arrangements were handled by Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.
