Michael Suchanek

Michael “Big E” “Chief” Suchanek was born June 20, 1968, and passed away Sunday, Apr. 21, 2024, at the age of 55.

Mike was a gentle giant and loved by everyone that met him. He started his career in law enforcement as a dispatcher. He quickly climbed the ladder serving as Police Chief for the City of DeQuincy beginning in 1995. After retiring as Chief he continued to work for the City of DeQuincy in its Public Works Department. Mike served as President of the Louisiana Police Association and served on the Board of Louisiana Retirees Association. He was a former President of the DeQuincy Railroad Museum. To say

Mike loved DeQuincy would be an understatement. He had a heart just as big as he was, and he was always willing to step in and lend a helping hand. Mike was involved with DeQuincy Dixie Youth for many years and for several years he was over the DeQuincy Recreational Swimming Pool. Mike was a Shriner and a member of the DeQuincy Masonic Lodge 279 F&AM. He was a sportswriter for the DeQuincy News for many years.

He is survived by his wife, Heather Suchanek; children, Kendra Suchanek, Michael “Bubba” Suchanek II, Amanda Shoemake, Jessica L. “Bug” Rossetter, Brayden Thibodeaux and wife Sara, Kailynn Thibodeaux; grandchildren, Shayna, Madisyn, Kayson, Ryleigh, Peyton, Krislyn, Alayna; father, Dennis Goodman Suchanek and wife Anita; stepfather, John Ciuffetelli, siblings, Jill Denise Suchanek and Mark S. Suchanek and wife, Rhonda; nieces and nephews, Jeremy, Jeffrey, Jessica, Jaylee, Kamryn, and Paxton.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Karen Gilland Ciuffetelli stepmother, Doris Suchanek; paternal grandparents, William Goodman and Fern Rainwater Suchanek; maternal grandparents, Bobby Eugene Gilland and Marion June Richey Woy; and nephew, Mark Anthony Weber.

Pallbearers were Terrill Vandergriff, Bobby Jordan, Brad Kellogg, Tony Hanson, Joe Robertson, Doug Phillips, Tom Threet, and Eddie Wellman.

The family received friends from 5-8 p.m., Thursday, Apr. 25. The funeral service was held at 10 a.m., Friday, Apr. 26, at Bible Baptist Church, 311 Second Street, DeQuincy. Interment followed at Riley Smith Memorial Park in DeQuincy.

Arrangements were handled by Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.
