Mavis Gant

Mavis Evie Simeon Stafford Gant, 87, was born Sept. 30, 1936, and passed away Monday, Apr. 22, 2024, in Sulphur surrounded by her family. Mavis lived most of her life in Livingston on Sonny Simeon Rd. before relocating to Walker. The last years of her life she lived with her daughter, Janet, in Sulphur.

Mavis was raised around music and spent most of her life playing the guitar and singing. Mavis had a heart for others. She was her happiest when she was taking care of someone in need. Over the years, Mavis invited so many in her home when they were no longer capable of caring for themselves. When a little girl who was blind and disabled needed a mom, Mavis took her in, adopted her, and loved her unconditionally for the rest of her life. Caring for others was her gift and she did it so well!

Left to cherish her memories are her daughters, Janet Harrel and husband Arvin, and Keim Grant; son, Richard Wayne Stafford Sr. and wife Rosanna; six grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, James “Sonny” Simeon; mother, Leona Tate Simeon; grandson, Richard Wayne Stafford Jr.; and brothers, Valmond Simeon and James “Dallie” Simoen.

The family received friends from 12-2 p.m. with the service beginning at 2 p.m., Saturday, Apr. 27, at Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home in DeQuincy. Interment followed at Riley Smith Memorial Park in DeQuincy.

Arrangements were handled by Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.
