Ned Johnson, Jr.

Ned Johnson, Jr was born June 3, 1942 to the late Ned and Marjorie Johnson in New Orleans. He departed this life on Sunday, Oct. 22, 2023 at the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Home in Jennings.

The Johnson family moved to DeQuincy when Ned was around 10 years of age. He made a lot of lifelong friends. His family joined Bethel AME Church. Ned was very active in sports and school. He graduated from Grand Avenue High School in 1961. He then attended Southern University where he majored in Pre-med.

He married his childhood sweetheart Leatha Mae Marburgh on Nov 1, 1966. Uncle Sam called during this time. He proudly served in the US Navy as a medic/corpsman for four years. His only regret while serving was that he couldn’t save all that he encountered during the VietNam War. It bothered him for the rest of his days. He returned to Southern University and graduated in 1970.

He and Letha relocated to Elkhart, Ind. where Ned worked as a Bio-chemist for Miles Laboratories for over 15 years. They eventually moved back home where he became an entrepreneur. His most prized business was Good Shepherd Home Health Care. He did this until his retirement.

Ned was involved in a lot of other clubs and activities. He was president of the All Schools Reunion. He enjoyed this, especially seeing old friends. He was also an active member of the Navy Hospital Corpsman Association. They had yearly gatherings at different bases all over the country, which he and Letha always made a point of attending. He loved the USA and tried to buy American-made products first. He said that he was doing his part to keep America moving and Americans working.

Ned enjoyed life and family was everything to him. He was named Jr. for a reason and definitely lived up to the name. He was stubborn, bullheaded, direct, nice, kind, selfless and loving. He said what he meant and meant what he said. He did everything with great thought and effort no matter what the task. The only thing is that he thought everyone else should give it their all and do it with the same energy as he did. “If a task is once begun, never leave it till it’s done. Be the labor great or small, do it well or not at all”. This was definitely his motto that he lived by.

Ned will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 57 years, Leatha Mae Johnson; three sisters, Elaine Jackson, Gail Johnson, and Joyce Williams; two brothers, Donald (Bessie) Johnson, and Alvin (Diane) Johnson; one brother-in-law, Cleveland (Andrea) Marburgh; three sisters-in-law, Gloria Neville, Delicia Marburgh, and Vera Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews; other relatives and friends.
