DeQuincy City Council met Monday, Feb. 9th; several properties move to next step in condemnation process

The City Council held it’s monthly meeting and was called to order by President Cameron Smith on Monday, Feb. 9, at 5:30 p.m. The regular meeting minutes from Jan. 12, 2026 were approved by the council.

Mayor Riley Smith mentioned the upcoming DeQuincy Masonic Squirrel Hunt scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 21, from 7 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. The Mayor also said the City Audit is underway and will be completed by Mar. 31. Mayor Smith also reported the city had made preparations ahead of these hard winter freezes and there had been no issues reported.

Larry Mendoza (owner of the old Perkins Bldg.) reported that he expects his contractor’s structural appraisal on the building within the next two weeks. He will then be able to move forward with his next steps of renovations.

Council adopted a Resolution authorizing Mayor Smith to sign the Cooperative Endeavor Agreement between the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office, the City of DeQuincy and the DeQuincy Police Department to accept three vehicles for law enforcement and public safety needs for the whole community.

John Williamson spoke to the council regarding his process of his ownership deed is almost complete on his property at 107 Frazier St. and he will then need his permit to put a new mobile home on it.

Consideration and Adoption of resolution approving the appointment of Joe Richardson as Director and William “Hank” Frazier as Alternate Director, for a term of four years, to the Board of Directors of the Louisiana Municipal Natural Gas Purchasing and Distribution Authority was approved.

Consideration and Adoption of resolution to award the contract to RP Construction, LLC for the Sanitary Sewer Lift Station Improvements, Planning and Construction was approved.

Ordinance #1003 was introduced and a public hearing set for Mar. 9, to update and amend Article V. – Historic District Commision, Sec. 2-111 Estalished, in the City Ordinance Code.

The following properties were approved for the next step in the condemnation process: 701 Seymour Pullam Rd., 1005 Banneker St., 1102 Banneker St., 808 Hayes St., 803 N. Division, 206 S. Holly St. and 211 N. Pine St.

DeQuincy Police Dept.

Annajo Haynes, Chief of Police, presented the monthly report for January 2026:

Total Citations written: $38,627. Fines and Bonds Collected: $26,884.28.

Complaints: 132. District #1 27, District #2 23, District #3 27, District #4 42, Calcasieu Sheriff’s Office 12, Beauregard Sheriff’s Office 1, Arrests 18, Tickets 109, Auto Accidents 5.

Public Works

Hank Frazier reported for January 2026:

Street Department:

Picked up limbs in all districts, Patched potholes in all districts, Picked up bulk items in all districts.

Sewer Department:

Cleaned Sewer mains on 305 Leblanc St. and at the corner of Smith and Boone St.

Gas Department:

Installed new gas services at 209 S. Frazier St., Rosie Hollie Rd. and on Corley St.; disconnected service at 1109 Richard Allen St.; replaced gas riser and valve at Northside Baptist Church and repaired gas leak on Hargrove Loop.

Fire Department

In the month of January 2026, the fire department had seven working calls and three other canceled in route. The type of calls were structure fires, investigations, assist Ward 6 with structure fire, assist Acadian Ambulance with medicals. They trained for four nights.
