Busy time for area firefighters – use caution when burning

Mutual Aid Wildfire

At 1:21 p.m., on Tuesday, Dec. 30, Ward 6 Fire responded to a mutual aid request from Beauregard Parish Fire Dist. 2 for a reported grass fire threatening structures.

On arrival of Command Unit 901, the grass fire closest to a structure was contained; however, strong winds had pushed the fire into a heavily wooded area. Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry was requested for tractor plows. Beauregard FD 2 and Ward 6 engines set up to protect vulnerable structures.

Brush UTVs from Beauregard FD 2, Ward 6 Fire, and Beauregard Parish Fire Dist. 4 were used to contain the fire until LDAF arrived to plow containment lines. The fire burned approximately 75 acres. No structures were damaged and all Ward 6 units were back in district at 6:30 p.m.

Houston River FD provided an Engine company to cover Ward 6 District while they assisted in Beauregard Parish.

Woods Fire

At 1:47 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 31, Ward 6 Fire responded to a woods fire on High Hope Rd. at Anthony Ferry Rd.

On arrival, approximately three acres were burning in a wooded area and spreading toward a residential structure. Firefighters deployed fire attack lines and quickly extinguished the fire advancing toward the structure. A brush UTV was deployed to contain the fire that hoselines couldn’t reach.

Houston River Fire was requested through Mutual Aid and responded with a brush truck and brush UTV.
Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry was requested to respond and on their arrival utilized a dozer plow to construct containment lines around the area.

At 5:47 p.m., Ward 6 was dispatched to the same location again. On arrival, all fires were still within the containment lines. Small fires were extinguished near the road.

For a few days after, smoke was visible in the area from numerous trees and stumps burning inside the burn area.
