Nan Trahan was born Sept. 22, 1938, and passed away Saturday, Dec. 27, 2025, at the age of 87.
She was known for her sassy spirit and her loving heart. Nan was deeply devoted to her faith and spent many years working with the church at First Baptist of Vinton, where she especially enjoyed helping with Vacation Bible School and teaching. Nan worked for Weiner’s Department Store for 20-plus years. She loved cooking and sharing meals with those she cared about most. Above all, Nan cherished her family and found her greatest joy in spending time with them.
She is survived by her children, Carla Schmeltz, Edward Trahan and wife Roxanna, Larry Trahan and partner Jamison, Craig Trahan and partner Sandy, Troy Trahan, Tracey Junot, and Judy Hanks and husband Ludger; grandchildren, Jessica Trahan, Jason Trahan, Shawna Thorton and husband Brandon, Lacey Johnson and husband Robert, Kevin Hanks, Brooklyn Johnson and husband Jacob, Seth Schmeltz, Sandy Vincent and husband Cody, and Lynn Trahan; brothers, Tommy Nichols and wife Louise, Jerry Nichols, and wife Belinda, and Wayne Nichols and wife Charlene; 10 great-grandchildren; and sister in-law, Gerry Fontenot.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel Fontenot and CC Nichols and wife Erline Nichols; brothers Eloi “Peco” Fontenot and Sammy Fontenot; sister, Clevie Fontenot; great-grandchild, Murphy Trahan; niece, Klaudia Nichols; daughter-in-law, Patricia Trahan; and son-in-law, Steve Junot.
The family would like to thank Holly Hill Nursing Home and Heart of Hospice for providing excellent care for Nan.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until time of the memorial service at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at Vinton First Baptist Church, 1401 Center St. in Vinton. Rev. Bobby Daniel will be officiating.
Arrangements are being handled by Riley Smith & Sons Funeral, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.
