It was almost a tale of two halves as the DeQuincy Tigers and Grand Lake Hornets battled to the very end last Thursday at G. Dalton Faircloth Memorial Stadium.
DeQuincy successfully kicked an onside kick and recovered to start the game and that quickly gave Big Red a lot of momentum as the Tigers would march down the field and take an early 7-0 lead. But it wasn’t long when Grand Lake would answer back and tie things up 7-7. Both teams would trade a couple more scores as DeQuincy would go into the locker room at halftime leading 19-14. Adjustments were made and the penalties plagued the Tigers as well as stalled drives which gave the Hornets the opportunity to take control of the game late in the third quarter and the entire fourth quarter. That’s exactly what they did as Grand Lake threw the knockout punch with 2 minutes left in the ball game to put it out of reach for the Tigers as Grand Lake won 28-19.
Both teams played their guts out and left everything on the field. Our Tigers may have come up short but they certainly showed a lot of improvement, toughness, and resilience despite the loss.
Hopefully, we will see a lot more of the Tigers and Hornets on the grid iron in the coming years!
