Glenn James Gilbert of Vinton was born Dec. 25, 1959, and passed away on Sunday, Mar. 9, 2025, at the age of 65. A man who lived life on his own terms, Glenn had a spirit as wild and free as the racehorses he loved. The track was his second home, and nothing brought him more joy than watching a good horse run.
He was a true Sabine River rat, a man of the woods, and an all-around outlaw in the best sense of the word – never one to be tamed, always forging his own path. But beneath that rugged exterior was a kind and generous soul, someone who would give you the shirt off his back and a story to go with it.
Glenn leaves behind his son, Colt (Kaitlyn) Gilbert; his sisters, Cynthia Leigh, Linda (Freddie) Carrier, and Gayla (T-Bone) Bustamante; and his brothers, Mike (Kelly) Gilbert, Mark (Kristi) Gilbert, Doug (Lisa) Gilbert, and David (Lisa) Gilbert. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews, along with a lifetime of memories that will be told and retold.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Raylee and Elaine Gilbert, and his two brothers, Louis and Jeffery Gilbert.
Though he has left this world, his spirit will forever ride the river currents, echo through the woods, and thunder down the track with the horses he loved.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Apr. 19, at Crossroads Baptist Church in Vinton. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m., with a service and fellowship to follow.
Arrangements are being handled by Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.
