Gene Royer

Sept. 27, 1935 – Sept. 29, 2021

On Sept. 29, 2021, Gene Royer passed away peacefully after a brief hospital stay near his home in his adopted city of Houston, Texas. Gene was a native of DeQuincy. He spent his high school years in the neighboring town of Oakdale, after which he enlisted in the Air Force. Gene was stationed in Germany and never lost his love of Germany’s beautiful countryside or its people, visiting many times during his life.

Among his many endeavors, Gene was an avid writer, publishing one book and many articles and online essays. He was a brilliant humorist and insightful social critic. Gene famously quipped, “You can lead a dog to paper, but you can’t make him read.”

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Eli Albert and Dorothy Royer; his loving wife, Patricia Drye; and one grandchild, Gene Jacob Royer.

He is survived by his three children, Ted Royer of Houston, Julie Royer of Atlanta Ga., and Scott Royer of DeQuincy. He leaves ten loving grandchildren, Angela, Amanda, Hanna, Candice, Sara, Elizabeth, Emily, Noah, Anna, and Heaven; along with sixteen beautiful great-grandchildren.

Gene’s ashes will be interned at the Alston Family Cemetery in DeQuincy. He will be laid to rest beside his great-grandfather and grandparents. There will be an informal graveside ceremony on Sunday, Dec. 8, at 1 p.m. All friends and family are invited to attend.
