Rev. Gary Sylvester, 82, of Buna, Texas passed away peacefully on Saturday, Sept. 28, 2024, at The Haven Assisted Living Home. Born on July 16, 1942, Gary lived his life pastoring and cowboying.
In 1962, he married Becky Hosch Sylvester while attending Western Apostolic Bible College in Stockton, California. They traveled as evangelists until accepting the pastorate in Daisetta, Texas, where they pastored for five years. Then the call to become pastor in Buna, Texas, where they pastored for 33 years. Lots of love and work went into each of these churches. So many good times, so many wonderful friendships were made. He was a pastor to so many young men that were raised under his pastorate in Buna that have become evangelists, pastors and ministers of the gospel.
He is survived by his daughter, Gail and husband Donnie; son, Clint and wife Kim; grandson, Ryan; granddaughters, Blair and husband Travis, and Brynn; sisters, Sylvia and husband Otis, and Pam; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Becky; parents, J. L. and Alice; and his sister, Deanie.
Special thanks to The Haven and staff of Lumberton, Texas for taking such good care of him during his last months of life. Thanks to all who visited and called.
The family received friends from 12 p.m. until the time of the funeral service at 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 7, at Buna United Pentecostal Church in Buna, Texas. Interment followed at Antioch Cemetery in Buna, Texas.
Arrangements were handled by Riley Smith & Sons Funeral Home, 1810 W. Fourth St., DeQuincy.
