Jervis LaRue Cooley of Singer, a beloved figure in the Beauregard Parish School System as a dedicated Coach, Teacher, Principal and School Board Member for over 30 years, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 26, 2024, at the age of 88 in Rosepine. Born on Oct. 23, 1935, LaRue touched the lives of countless students, colleagues, and community members through his unwavering commitment to education.
Throughout his life, LaRue found joy in the simple pleasures of hunting, fishing, and tending to his garden, but his greatest source of happiness was his cherished family and friends. His legacy of kindness, wisdom, and leadership will forever resonate in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
He is survived by his sons, Jarvis Cooley and Kathryn of Singer, Kevin Cooley and Debbie of Singer; sister, Nelda Ford and Jerry of Many; grandchildren, Michael “Ryan” Cooley and Erin, H. Erin Cooley, Janice Willis and Kevin, Austin G. Cooley, Cameron B. Cooley; great-grandchildren, Brett, Penelope, Caleb, Opal and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
LaRue was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Cooley; son, James W. Cooley; daughter-in-law, Deanna Cooley; grandsons, Scott G. Cooley and Joshua A. Cooley; parents, Fred and Lora Cooley; and brother, Ronnie Cooley.
Visitation was held Saturday, Sept. 28, from 5 until 9 p.m. and continued on Sunday, Sept. 29, from 11 a.m. until the time of service at 2 p.m., all at Myers Colonial Funeral Home in DeRidder. Brother Garrett Fuselier and Brother Kennis Smith officiated the service. Pallbearers were family and friends. Burial followed at Havens Cemetery in Singer.
Let us honor and remember the life of J. LaRue Cooley, a remarkable educator, mentor, and friend who will be deeply missed but fondly remembered. May his spirit live on in the memories and lives he has touched.
